The makers of this wearable fitness tracker recommend 10,000 steps per day.  There is actually no science behind this, although it does give people a nice round number of steps as a goal.

Walking is a good part of any weight less strategy. A brisk walk may not help someone build muscles ,but it helps maintain muscle tone and it increases cardiovascular fitness. It can help someone bring down his blood pressure. his cholesterol and his triglycerides. It can also be a good exercise for people who are otherwise limited in their activities. Walking is a low-impact exercise that is good for people with many physical limitations. A fitness enthusiast just needs to remember not to overdo it.
